Nancy Cohen Israel is a Dallas-based art historian and writer. She is also an educator at the Meadows Museum where she was previously a regular lecturer. Nancy has regularly contributed to Patron magazine since its inception in 2011. Prior to that, she wrote locally for FD Luxe and Arts + Culture nationally for artltd. and Lilith.
As the owner of Art à la Carte, Nancy organized and led the popular art tour program, Second Saturdays, to local venues as well as to dynamic contemporary art destinations throughout Texas. For 20 years, she was an instructor through Southern Methodist University’s Continuing and Professional Education program (CAPE).
Nancy has served as a juror and/or curator for exhibitions such as Craighead-Green’s New Texas Talent, the Creative Art Center’s Art in the City, the Texas Sculpture Association’s Bare Essentials, University of Dallas’ 50th anniversary of the Braniff Graduate School, among others. Most recently, she served as the juror for Yud, TJAA's 10th Anniversary exhibition. This was a full circle moment for Nancy as she also served as the juror and curator of Bereshit, TJAA's inaugural exhibition.
Nancy graduated from The University of Texas at Austin with a Bachelor’s Degree in Humanities, concentrating on Late Medieval art and literature in Northern Europe. She earned her Master of Arts Degree in Art History from The George Washington University in Washington, D.C., where her area of concentration was Renaissance painting. While still in graduate school, she worked as an exhibition coordinator at The Trust for Museum Exhibitions, a nonprofit organization devoted to organizing international traveling art exhibitions. In 1991, Nancy returned to Dallas as the McDermott Intern in Education at the Dallas Museum of Art. Her introduction to the contemporary art world came during a four-year stint as the director of the Edith Baker Gallery.
