Suki John, PhD, is an Associate Professor in the School for Classical & Contemporary Dance at Texas Christian University. She has worked internationally as a dance artist and scholar -- teaching, choreographing, and writing about the intersections between dance, history and culture. Suki’s evening-length choreodrama, Sh'Ma, is based on her family’s experience in the Holocaust. She was commissioned by the People’s Theater of Yugoslavia to write the libretto, direct, and choreograph the work. She collaborated on the original score with composer Suba (Mitar Subotić), premiering Sh’Ma in Novi Sad in the Former Yugoslavia in 1990 and restaging it in NYC for the Jewish Voices Series at the 92nd St. Y.
Suki is published in the academic and mainstream press, including the New York Times, Dance Research Journal, Afro-Latin American Biography, encyclopedias by Oxford and Routledge, and her book, Contemporary Dance in Cuba: Técnica Cubana as Revolutionary Movement. Suki is founder of Cuban Arts Match, an organization that brings Cuban and North American artists together, and co-founder of dance2degrees, designed to bring attention to the existential issue of climate change. She is the Director of Dance for the Texas Jewish Arts Association.
