Nancy Cohen Israel, owner of Art à la Carte, is a Dallas-based art historian, art educator, writer and curator. She is a regular lecturer at the Meadows Museum as well as a guest lecturer at museums throughout the area. For 20 years, she was an instructor through Southern Methodist University’s Continuing and Professional Education program (CAPE). Nancy is also a regular contributor to Patron magazine. Her work been published nationally in artltd., Lilith and on more.com. Previously, she has been a contributing writer to FD Luxe and Arts + Culture. For 15 years, Nancy organized and led the popular art tour program, Second Saturdays, to local venues as well as to dynamic contemporary art destinations throughout Texas.
Nancy has served as a juror and/or curator for exhibitions such as Craighead-Green’s New Texas Talent, the Creative Art Center’s Art in the City, and the Texas Sculpture Association’s Bare Essentials, among others. Most recently, she curated View from the Art Village: 50-Year Retrospective, in honor of the University of Dallas’ 50th anniversary of the Braniff Graduate School. She also served as a juror for Pleased to Meet You, the inaugural exhibition at Open Space.
Nancy graduated from The University of Texas at Austin with a Bachelor’s Degree in Humanities, concentrating on Late Medieval art and literature in Northern Europe. She earned her Master of Arts Degree in Art History from The George Washington University in Washington, D.C., where her area of concentration was Renaissance painting. While still in graduate school, she worked as an exhibition coordinator at The Trust for Museum Exhibitions, a nonprofit organization devoted to organizing international traveling art exhibitions. In 1991, Nancy returned to Dallas as the McDermott Intern in Education at the Dallas Museum of Art. Her introduction to the contemporary art world came during a four-year stint as the director of the Edith Baker Gallery.
